Without a doubt, African-American Spirituals are the most influential compositions in the history of American Art and popular music. From their influence on the 19th century songs of Stephen Foster and the like, to the explosion of Jazz, blues, and ultimately everything from Gershwin to Elvis to Motown, Madonna, and yes, even Justin Bieber. Originally the songs of slaves, this heartfelt music is rich with the full expression of human emotion. It was orally passed down through the years until the late 19th century, when composers like Harry T. Burleigh began to write it down and bring it into concert halls and churches. It continues to inspire and feed the hungry soul to this day.
Francis Poulenc‘s first song cycle was Le bestiaire. It was never a “smash hit” as far as Art Music goes, but it remains in the repertory for a number of reasons. It demonstrates Poulenc’s compositional talent, early in his career, while he was still serving in the French army during World War I. It’s not exactly avant-garde, but it’s modern enough to catch you off-guard if you’re not used to the Art Music of the 20th century. And, if you do find the modern sound a bit challenging, the pieces are short and sweet, and the subject matter, fun (animals!) Finally, it helps to introduce French Art Song, or mélodie, to budding voice students.
In Rosina’s well loved solo, she presents herself as coy and sweet, but wickedly clever. She sings “A thousand tricks I play until I have my way; be on your guard.” Then, working with her lover, she proceeds to make an idiot out of a cruel, elderly suitor. Don’t let the gorgeous bel canto singing fool you – and definitely don’t play games with this woman!
